Smallville fans are all agog at the news that a whole mess of DCU characters including Hawkman, Sandman and Stargirl are going to be paying a visit to the surprisingly eventful and cosmopolitan Kansas farm town in the near future.

Ooh.. agog. If this show makes it to season ten, how cool would it be if Magog was the Big Bad? As long as he wasn’t played by some douchey soap opera star - and as long as his costume isn’t designed by whoever decided to make Hawkman look like a patron at an S&M bar. Cause let’s face it, Magog is already pushing the envelope pretty far in that department.

I’m very excited to see the Justice Society coming to Smallville, even though it completely takes any pretense of continuity - not just with the comics universe, but with Smallville’s own previous eight seasons - and flushes it down the toilet.

Continuity is a burden. Just accept the fact that Wolverine is in Madripoor, Germany, Russia, New York, Thunderbolts Mountain and on the Moon at the same time. How is it possible? Because it’s f**kin’ escapist fiction, that’s how.

But I digress.

I’m all for bringing as many superheroes to screens big and small, as long as its done well. And I applaud Smallville’s producers for having the good taste to not feature Ghettoman, the unbelievably offensive “hero” who was a part of the action the last time this many DCU heroes were together for a live-action program: the so-bad-its-great “Legends of the Superheroes”.

A few weeks back I commented on the ages-old feud between Marvel’s demigods Thor and Hercules, and noted that, at their fathers’ behest, the two had been at one another’s throats -

or other body parts -

from the day they met.

I underscored my point with a video clip of the Titan’s first clash, back when Thor was part of Marvel’s line-up of televised stills shown in slow succession that could generously be referred to as animation.

We’ve come a long way since then - Thor and Herc have (for now) reached peace and even a mutual admiration of sorts, and after one kick to the Golden Apples too many they have come to accept that their rivalry is irrational and needs to be worked out through self-understanding and perhaps some assistance from the Greek god of therapy, Lexaprosis. And Marvel’s animation is now powered by billion-dollar Disney computers and a legion of writers, who somehow make shows which are far less entertaining than the old shoestring budget ‘toons of the ’60s. Huh. Well.

Anyway, I only showed the first half of the battle, thinking it would help to illustrate my point. Little did I guess that the people would be left clamoring for more - for hot god-on-god battle action, for the second half of the episode.

Verily, ’tis my bad. I grant thee they request, fair mortals. Gaze in wonder upon the epic battle of Thor vs. Hercules - Part 2!

OK so tonight’s Batman: The Brave and the Bold season premiere episode was pretty sweet - ironically, the animated series is infinitely better than the most recent incarnation of the classic comic from which it takes its name. The current volume of the Brave and the Bold has re-defined “lame” from issue 1, and with this weeks cover, it has reached an apotheosis in lame-ness.

That’s right, apotheosis. It’s a word. Look it up, you’ll en-smarten yourself.

Anyway, as nice as it is to have a decent Batman show back on the air, everybody knows that cartoon heaven happens Sunday nights at midnight, when we get new episodes of the Venture Bros.

Here’s a quick look at this week’s new Venture episode, Self-Medication.
