Color me confused. FOX, which claims it can't make a profit from The Simpsons, is looking to go into business with three-time movie loser The Punisher. Mind you, I'm an enormous fan of the character, from his debut as a misguided Spider-Man baddie to his time in the '80s as a vengeful symbol of the U.S.'s fears and anxieties in the face of the cold war, not to mention a still-damaged national psyche from our decades-earlier misadventures in Vietnam. Creators as diverse as Kurt Busiek and Garth Ennis have put their distinctive stamp on The Punisher over the years, and Jason Aaron is currently doing a great job on Punisher MAX. But The Punisher has never made the transition to the big screen with any degree of creative or commercial success, and as to the likelihood of FOX picking up a Punisher series - well, maybe if they refit the character to be a female magazine editor who will stop punishing just as soon as he finds love.
Or a henpecked cop played by the brother from Everybody Loves Raymond.
In any case, they've committed to a pilot, described by Deadline as an hour-long procedural helmed by Criminal Minds' Ed Bernero. I'll be watching this story with interest, and cautious enthusiasm - I mean, if they actually pulled off a good Punisher series, that would be the best thing ever. But I'd be lying if I said I had high hopes for this one seeing the light of day.
